Zoo Camp FAQ

My child is under four, can they come to Zoo Camp?

For our camp, we require that all children are at least 5 years of age.

My child is over 10, can they come to Zoo Camp?

Camp Wildlife Koas will accept 11 year olds however the curriculum is designed for those between the ages of 8-10. If your child is older than 11yrs we do not currently offer a camp program for them. If your child is a teenager and would be interested in Volunteering as a Junior Leader please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at scarlos@honzoosoc.org.

Does my child need a lunch?

Yes. We provide snacks and water throughout the day but you are responsible for sending your child with a reusable water bottle and a lunch unless you purchase the lunch package offered online.

Taste, Honolulu Zoo Catering offers to provide hot lunch for $50 per week. Lunch package needs to be pre-ordered online the Thursday prior to camp date before 4pm. Printable menus are posted for each week. Nutritional information upon request.

If your child has special dietary needs please contact our Program Director at jsmith@honzoosoc.org

What if I arrive late?

If you are arriving late for drop-off or pickup between 9am- 4:20pm please take your child to the Membership window at the Zoo’s entrance. The Membership staff will contact your child’s teacher and will assist you in locating his/her class.

If you are attempting to drop-off or pick-up outside of the above times please call our Camp Manager at (808) 554-7173. This number will put you in touch with a camp teacher who will coordinate with you. If for whatever reason they are not able to answer the phone or get back to you in time, please report to the Membership desk at the front of the Zoo for assistance.

What if I need to pick up my child early?

If you need to pick up your child early please coordinate with your Camp Leader during drop off. If it is last minute call our Camp Manager at (808) 554-7173. This number will put you in touch with a camp counselor who will coordinate with you. If for whatever reason they are not able to answer the phone or get back to you in time, please report to the Membership desk at the front of the Zoo for assistance.

Who can pick up/ drop off my child?

Only the adults (over the age of 18) who are listed on the Parental Consent form are authorized to pick up your child. These adults may or may not be different than those you put down as emergency contact during your registration. All adults will be required to show a photo ID when picking up children.

Do I need a +1 (US) line for my child to attend camp?

Yes. Before your child can join us at Zoo Camp we need to have at least one +1 (US) phone number. We cannot place international calls from our Camp Cell. It is important this is a personal line that can put us immediately in touch with a parent in case of emergency and NOT a hotel line.

Why are campers required to speak and understand English?

While we have many bilingual campers and a few bilingual camp staff, this is a safety policy. Everyone needs to be able to understand directions given by any of the camp staff, junior leaders or Zoo employees.

Why are campers required to bring a reusable water bottle?

While we have air-conditioned classrooms for our campers, they do spend the majority of the day out in the Zoo learning and playing games. It can get rather hot and humid in the Hawaii climate and it is important that kids are able to drink water whenever they need and while they are out and about Campers can refill water bottles with ice cold water throughout the day.

What should my child wear to camp?

Campers are required to wear closed toe shoes. We suggest sending them in a pair that you know will stay on their feet during rigorous play. Please apply sunscreen prior to camp and send them with a hat for additional sun protection.

Will my child be touching animals?

The short answer is no. However we do have a petting zoo that is home to goats, chickens and other domestic animals that campers can touch when supervised. Your child will never be forced to touch or interact with an animal if they do not want to.

Can I pay for Aftercare or Lunch on a daily basis?

No. These are package items and we do not offer a daily rate.

My child has special needs, can he/she come to camp?

Yes! The Honolulu Zoo Society welcomes children with special needs. Please email education@honzoosoc.org so that we may accommodate you.

Please note that if your keiki requires a paraprofessional during the school year, we do require that the paraprofessional is present during your camper’s time here at the Zoo.

My child has severe allergies, how can you accomodate us?

Our staff are trained in CPR/First Aid/Epi-pen use. However we do not have an Epi-pen on grounds. If your child has a severe allergy, please provide an unexpired Epi-pen. It will be given to the teacher to hold onto for your child’s camp stay. If purchasing lunch for Zoo Camp, please be sure to include ALL allergy information!

We also provide snacks at Zoo Camp, if your child has an allergy to the snacks, we will do our best to provide an alternative.
